Where the hell did I go?

Needed a five month break from Tumblr because … I cannot remember why. Ah well.

Burned, like the onion rings I never made.

  • Fedora's Mother: We're fasting tonight.
  • Fedora: You're not making supper?
  • Fedora's Mother: No, you are.
  • Fedora: ...Which explains why we're fasting...

Weird dreams.

I just had a dream, where my best friend from middle school (who I haven’t talked to in ages) and I were playing by some train tracks, when this other kid (Who actually was Jamie_M from Starmen.Net) got killed. Not sure how it’s related, but this train car behind Jamie was on fire, and we knew it was going to explode. So, we couldn’t save his body. We ran away, and tried to warn everyone. Long story short, I told the local high school principal (who was not mine, when I was there) because I’m such a good guy.

Even in my dreams, I am such a good guy. Am I a good guy in yours?

If only BJ Penn knew what he was in for…

Birthday Bets

Fedora, it’s your birthday. Happy birthday, Fedora.~

I’ve received a fantastic birthday gift today, from Zuffa, Inc. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, well, it’s basically the company who owns the Ultimate Fighting Championship. (Apparently “Zuffa” means ‘fight” in Italian. Go figure.) For many MMA fans, this is the fight we’ve wanted to see for ages. Here is a quick history lesson.

BJ Penn, (also known as the Prodigy; I swear I had the nickname first) won the vacant Lightweight Championship last year, when he defeated Joe “Daddy” Stevenson at UFC 80. It was a dominating performance Penn put on, and was only out shined by an even better performance against Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk at UFC84. Penn had said he wanted to move up to the Welterweight Division as well, and hold both titles at the same time. Is this good for the sport? I’m not entirely sure. I think you could spin it both ways. Anyway, let’s not just give him the belt. He has to go through:

Georges “Rush” St-Pierre (not given the nickname because of the Canadian band, but because of how fast he comes to fight) is a dominant welterweight champion, ever since he defeated Matt Serra at UFC 83. (Serra scored the “underdog of the year” award in 2007, when he TKO-d St-Pierre.) At UFC 79, on barely any notice, St-Pierre stepped in for an injured Serra, to fight my all-time favourite fighter, Matt Hughes, for the Interim title. St-Pierre destroyed him, and earned the shot at Serra. At UFC 87, St-Pierre annihilated consensus #2 ranked Jon Fitch in a five round massacre. Since the loss to Serra, nobody has put a dent in GSP’s armour. Could BJ be the first?

The first time these two fought, was in 2006. It was a very bloody affair, with BJ busting GSP open in the first round. However, GSP came back to win rounds 2 and 3, to win via split decision. After that loss, BJ has been unstoppable. Except for the loss to Serra, (the loss GSP states is the best thing to ever happen to him), you could say the same for GSP. So, if we’re betting on this fight, which route do we go?

Vegas has GSP as the favourite. GSP is favoured at -170, while Penn sits at +140. Reasons? First, GSP (albeit, barely) won the first fight. Second, GSP is fighting at the weight class he should be at. Penn can be a great fighter, but he shines best at 155. This will be at 170. Penn will need to train his ass off, just to compete with “Rush”. Third, GSP has the stamina to go five rounds easy, while we’re not sure about Penn. -170 seems about right.

However, Penn could shock the world. He has the skills, the takedown defense, and the heart to win. I’m not 100% sure that GSP could take BJ down, but I’m fairly certain he can. BJ can do well on the feet, but I think GSP is better. Overall, I’m taking GSP. One unit play.

The rest of the card looks amazing as well. Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida puts his 13-0 record on the line against Thiago Silva. Silva also sports a 13-0 record. Machida is favoured by Vegas, with a moneyline of -275. Silva is +205. Silva’s last fight that I can remember, was UFC 78, when he destroyed Houston “The Assassin” Alexander, in a easy win. Machida is coming off wins over Ortiz and Sokoudjou. I think Machida is the more tested fighter, and I think he wins this. (I said by sub, in second round, but I was ridiculous to think that. He’ll win by decision.)

With the rest of the fights, I’m making small bets on the favourites, except for two fights. Thiago Tavares is favoured against Manvel Gamburyan, and I honestly see Manvel coming out on top. -135 to +105, and I’ll happily take the underdog. The other fight, is Karo Parisyan and Dong Hyun Kim. Kim has looked solid in his fights, while the old Karo refuses to show up. It’s -220 to +180, and the odds are nice enough for me to take a chance.

I will say this much. I’ve been very good with my MMA betting in the past, but there is only one fight on the card where I’m putting down more than one unit. Jon Fitch is so heavily favoured at -600 to Akihiro Gono’s +400, that I’m making it a two unit play. Although the upset would be fun, I don’t see it happening. I’ll take Fitch.

I’ve also made my NBA picks for the day, and they can be read here, at Starmen.Net. Currently 19-5-1 on the season, and hoping to have another good day.

Fedora was talking to one of his hands today.

  • Fedora: You're not as useful as the right hand, when it comes to everyday tasks.
  • Left hand: ...
  • Fedora: Work on it.
